  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

sounds a bit like head tilt to me, but im not knowlegeable ont he subject, hopefulyl sum1 else can offer u some advice, in the meantime maybe do a search on the forum for head tilt?x

Oh dear
It is really important that you get your Bunny to a Vet *today*
The head tilt may be the result of a middle ear infection or a condition called Encephalitizoon Cuniculi (EC)
Here is some info about EC

http://www.rabbitwelfare.co.uk/rwf/articles/ecuniculi.htm

More worrying is that you say your Bun also has a bulging eye. This could indicate that there is an abscess behind her eye.
Your Bun does need urgent Veterinary treatment. This is likely to include antibiotics to treat for infection, Fenbendazole to treat for EC an an anti-inflammatory to deal with the inflammation and pain
Good Luck and please keep us posted

i am trying to find a vet now, its hard in swede everything closes on a saturday...but my mum and i are working on it. will let you know.

thanks

Did you manage to see a vet?
A similar thing happened with our Ant a couple of weeks ago. He's made a miraculaous recovery though ... so try not to panic until you know more. x

well got her to an emergency vet. They are only specialists in dogs and kats so they werent to sure. they priscribed medicine for a parasite and when my dad gets back from england (i will still be in england) he will take her to the rabbit vet. the Vet gave her two shots of water and suggested babyfood until because she has to keep eating or she will die.

hopefully all will be well. am sitting up with her at the moment trying to get her to eat babyfood, shes flopped out and not looking too impressed. :D

My bun has head tilt and, we think an inner ear infection which makes him roll when he tries to walk, (very dizzy) hopefully, he is showing signs of recovery now but it has been a long time. Best advice is to get him to see a vet and get his advice. And then PLEASE let us know how he is and what has been advised. Both the parasite and an inner ear infection have the same results though so how is your vet sure it is EC? Are her eyes flickering? Is she unbalanced or just a head tilt? Is she on any other meds?? Sorry for all the questions but I know how it is to be so upset about a bun's illness.

When you say "flopped out" Do you mean to say she's just lying down but still reacts to you/anything else.

Or lying down and when you pick her up she's limp and doesn't react to anything at all?

If it's the last one thats a sign of a very seriously ill bunny.

okay,

her eyes arent flickering, its just a head tilt, she has only fallen over once and that was by trying something stupid. The vet thought it was either EC or Parasite.

She was flopped out next to me, relaxed, she reacted to everything. shes drinking and eating hay. nothing else though...

Did vet give you any antibiotics? Could also be an ear infection. When Ant had the same problem we treated him for both the parasite and the ear infection as a vet can't be sure which is causing the head tilt.
Hope your bunny is soon on the mend x

Thats good that she is still reactive :D
I just got worried when you said "flopped out" I thought you actually mean't she had gone all limp, which was what happened to a bunny of mine before he died.

Erm, EC is a parasite.. I'm not aware of any others that can cause head tilts, do you recall the name of the other one?

no but i am taking ther to my rabbit specialist vet tomorrow. Just got back ffom the uk and she is still alive which is a start.
eating and drinking loads!!! the only problem (as such) is her neck!

I think rabbits can live quite happily with a 'crick' neck so long as it has been treated and is nothing more sinister.

I would urge you to go for further treatment though. Charlie has been like this for 5 weeks now - gradually getting worse until now where there seems to be a little tiny bit of improvement - he can't balance. He has never ever had a problem with eating or drinking though. Rabbits are sooo good at disguising how ill they are! Please keep us up to date on what is happening!
