  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

myxi help urgent....

bunnyrun

Mama Doe
had a bunny bought in today who genitals are very swollen and scabby, is this the 1st signs of myxi, he was living with 2 other bunnies so im not sure if they,ve bn fighting the owners said they havnt been,i always thought it was the eyes that swelled first, ive isolated him and taken every precaution i can but im worried advice really appreciated

There are a few possiblities myxie being one of them although scabby genitals is less common, I am more suspicious of vent disease (rabbit syphillus) than myxie.

I would suggest getting them checked out by a vet in the morning so that appropriate treatment can be started.

I've had three buns with myxi, the first two weren't vaccinated so developed the worst strain of it, with them, swollens rear ends were the last sign (discovered the day they were pts :( r.i.p) In all three cases the first sign was swollen eyelids & runny eyes.Everything i have read has said that the first symptoms are usually the swollen, puffy eyes giving them that 'sleepy' look.Of course it doesn't mean your bun doesn't have myxi just because he hasn't got sore eyes, sorry i'm not being much help...i'd get him to the vet asap if i were you.Hope he's ok :(
