will some rabbits just not bond?!

hey all

i know i havent been around for abit but here i am again lol. gunna try me best to keep up todate with things!

anyways i could really use some help

after puzzle sadly left us afew weeks later my friend bought me a surprise. a little dwarf bunny called snowbelle
anyways she is now 7 months old. ive tried to see how harvey would react to her and omg he seems to hate her. i tried in neurtal places serveral times where puzzle never was and he just growls and proper goes for snowbelle.
ever since puzzle left harvey hasnt been the same and despite all my gentle coaxing and attempts with him hes really withdrawn.
will i ever be able to get harv and snowbell to bond or is he just gunna hate her forever?
she isnt spayed yet could this also be it ?- when i rang the vets to enquire about a spay they said they really dont like to do spays as they are more risky and that often its just the male who needs to be done. but if i really did want her done they would do it for me.the rescue close to me they only neuter the males and rehome females unspayed. shes not argressive and is sweet and ever so gentle.
ooh id love them to be a couple and to see harvey happy again.
it was so easy with puzzle and harvey - this just seems so different and im abit scared incase he does do damage to her!
any help or advice would be gratefully recieved

Hey hun

Could you try another vet thats more used to spaying girlies? Im sure someone on here could recommend one that isnt too far away :D x

I know they are supposed to chase and stuff, and it does look worse than it actually is  Buu and Beau have been going for each other before and it looked terrible but then they just flopped together like nothing had happened  Is there anyway its just normal bonding behaviour but scaring you? I know I was terrified when I saw fur flying with Buu and Beau :D x

From my own personal experience 2 female rabbits are easiser to pair than when one or both are unneutered. If your vet is unhappy to neuter a female I would suggest you find a more experienced one who is happy to do so. ARC neuters all their females primarily to protect them from uterine cancer than any other reason. With the vet ARC use we believe that their is minimal risk put on our buns whom are neutered.

I believe that most rabbits will bond together, however the rules of bonding must be followed, this is particuarly important with same sex pairs. If you are inexperienced with bonding it can be quite a daunting experience as you may find it easier if you can find someone local to assist you.

it is a male / female pair i am trying to bond.
i dunno he just really growled and tried to bite her. i dunno if its because shes so much smaller than him which makes me scared or the fact ive never seen him so vicious. it does remind me of when he used to go past bejis cage and go for him through the bars. and snowbell is deffo a female so just dunno why hes acting like this towards her.
i think the vets would do a good job of spaying snowbell if i asked and as i dont drive i dont really have much of a pick in what vets i can use. the only other one up the town is rubbish from previous experenice.
im that scared of doing it myself ive even tried to hunt down a local bonding service but sadly nothing seems to have come from that

Are there any rescues on here close to you? Maybe you could ask them if it would be possible if they could help you in return for a donation? Even if its not a place that advertises helping with bonding there is no harm in asking :D x

It took me 4 months to bond my two. Even the RSPCA looked at me doubtful when I asked for further advice (I had already bonded twice before with only small scuffles). It ended up me sitting in the Wendy House (neutral territory) between them for an hour every night in the dark and letting them mooch around each other. They were then put back in the hutch with the divider so they could see/smell each other until the next bonding session the following evening. In the end the slow approach worked for us and they are good together now. My advice would be not to give up on them.

I'd say keep going Kirsty. Have you actually put them together? Jen was faaaaaar more aggressive when there were bars in between them than when she was actually put with Rhia. My girls have had their fair share of fights, and theyre quite happy with having a few hours a day together atm..but Im going to try & get them together full time. Although with Rhias bl00dy obsession with jens eyes :)evil:), its going to be tough!! Xx

Hi Kirsty

i would recommend finding a vet who does a lot of speys and getting Snowbell done..when she has recovered try again.
shame you're not nearer as i would bond them for you.

thanks all for replies.

yeah ive tried them together without bars cas thought maybe harvey was being protective about his hutch even with her next to it. i cant really explain what he did. he made this awful noise and set himself back and pounced foward. luckly i had my hands close to her incase of this and whipped her out the way but i got wounded in the process.

jill, yeah ive seen a rabbit place advertised in northampton who seem to specialise in rabbits. so in new year may see if i can get her done there and maybe ask my friend if we could have a day out in northampton while shes being done.
lol jill i did actually feel the same about me not being closer, well im not too far, it would be managable but would feel bad depriving any other animals of a space if my two were there
