Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

My Rabbits bad stomach

ittim

New Kit
Hi, Our Rabbit has this year developed quite a bad stomach, at first we put it down to the carrot tops we were feeding her but for the past 6 weeks shes only been on dried food. At first we thought it had cured it but this morning there was a lot of ... what can only be described as dioreah (sp?)

She is only two and in the first year had no digestive problems, she had a mix of hay, pellets and carrot tops (as recommended by the vet) but this year she's had a bad stomach quite regualrly.

She seems happy enough in herself.

Just wondered if anyone could offer some advice?

Many Thanks in advance.

Has your vet taken a feaces sample for analysis?

One nasty illness which causes diah is Coccidiosis but there are other dietary complaints and infections which can have similar reprocussions.

Is it true diarrhoea or just unformed/excess caecotrophs?

If the latter you might find that *reducing* her pellet feed helps as it will make her eat more hay. It is the long fibre (hay/grass) that helps the hind gut work properly ie formed caecotrophs which Bun should eat straight from their bum.

Has your Bun had her teeth checked. Many GI disturbances can be related to Dental problems, even in a young Rabbit

Fibreplex is a pro/prebiotic paste with added Fibre. You could try her with some of that too

Hope some of this helps :)

thanks for the replies! :D

she hasn't seen the vet over this problem, her initial problem was with her eyes, apprently she had a poor diet to start with (generally flakes from pets at home -the kind of generic food you can get) we were told to give her a more natural diet and supplement with the pellets, at that point her stomach was okay, its only been in the past 6 months that she's had these odd occurances.

Now, thinking about it, she hasn't had as much hay as normal so she has probably been eating more of the pelets. (they are the supa rabbit ones) we were told that these were the best ones as far as pellet food goes.

maybe we should give her more hay and less pellets?

Does it look like dark splatty stuff or soft bunches of grapes? That's what caecotrophs look like.

Were her eyes watering?

If so then it sounds like teeth as Jane suggested. Teeth problems are known to cause secondary eye problems as they tooth root interferes with the tear duct.

I think she needs to see a vet for a dental check.

Yes, she's been to the vet twice about it, only seems to happen in the summer.

The vet last time rinsed the tear ducts out and both times we have been given a gel to put into her eyes which seems to help a bit.

as foor the feaces it looks like dark splatty stuff, its very flat. (if that helps.)

edit to say that the vet informed us of her dietry needs and said this should help with the tooth problem. The more i think about it the more i'm sure that she needs more hay in her diet.
