Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Broken pelvis

New at this thing but had to write. Just found out that my bunny has a BROKEN PELVIS BONE. He is still eating, drinking, using bunny litter and in good spirts. The vet said she would have to make calls on Monday to specialists to see what should be done. She also said that if cats brake their pelvis, they can heal in 6-8wks. God, I hope this can heal!!
Has anyone faced a similar problem? ?

I don't know about broken pelvis, but my previous bunny broke her spine and she had to be put down, cos she wasn't using her back legs. Is your bun still using his back legs?

Thanks for answering. Yes, he uses one of the legs and holds the injured one up. Still hoppes around, grooms himself and generally looks ok.

It sounds like a fracture rather than a straight break right through the bone (sorry, I do not know the technical term). If like you say a cat's can heal then the chances for your bunny are probably similar too.

I hope he can recover, thinking of you.

Sorry I have no past experience of pelvic fractures in rabbits, I would guess that treatment will depend on whether it is a stable fracture meaning the bones do not move or if it is unstable where the bones are moveable and will not feal without stabilisation.

Any type of breakage of a bone is known as a fracture.

Hi, can't help you with your question, but just a quick suggestion untill monday. It might be best to put him in a rather small cage for the time being, no jumping or hopping around. I imagine more damage can be done otherwise.
Does he live outside? Maybe would be good to take him inside for a while.

The reason I posted this, is that I know of rabbits who broke a bone, they had to be in a small cage for a long time to recover, just to avoid more damage and so it could heal.

Good Luck!

PS: Ours fell from the sofa ones and hurt a muscle in his back an stopped eating right away, so if yours is active and eating, I think he makes a pretty good chance! (ours was fine after a visit to the vet too)

Broken Pelvis

Thanks for the suggestion Clicquot. We did do just that. Both of our bunnies are indoor rabbits with run of the house when we are there and caged in a huge cage that is about 50sq ft, 2flrs. We placed Buttons (the one with the injury) into a small cage and placed that cage into the large one so he could be near Sasha (his female partner he just bonded with a few weeks ago). Buttons is from a resuce place and he had been abused by his former owner. We've only had him for 8weeks. He is extremely skiterish and runs when you go near him. So placing him in a smaller cage I think was a good idea because it saves us having to chase him in the large cage if we need to pick him up to take him back to the vet. God, I'm praying he makes it. It'll kill us to have to make a decision to put him down and probably on halloween night too.

Sending positive vibes for your bunny. Do you know how it happened, or do you think it resulted from his previous history of abuse?

Broken Pelvis -update - doing ok so far

Hi again, Thanks for sending good vibs. Buttons, our bunny that we adopted from a resuce place broke his pelvis over a week ago. (he bulted from us on his outdoor run in a fenced in backyard and he went under our foot just as we were putting it down - I'm sure you can imagine just how abosultely aweful we feel. We've done everything possible to ensure that our bunnies have a huge home, runs, healthy food and a safe place and then this happens). It is a clean fracture that the vet thinks might heal on its own. We have him on pain meds (Metcam and Tramadol) and he seems to be doing remarkably well. He is still eating, drinking etc and is in good spirits. We will have another xray done in about 3 wks to see how he's doing. If it heals on its own then chances are he will develop arthritis almost immediately - so the vet says. We'll have to see how it goes. We have the option of maintaining pain meds then or having an operation and having the leg ambutated.

That's slightly good news...

You might want to look for an osteopath in the case of arthritis, I am sure they can help prevent it from hurting. Will be a challenge to find one near to you though...

My male Inky managed to break his toe (I have no idea how), I was so worried but after a few weeks of rest in a smaller space and pain medication, it's healed up really well.

I found that putting a duvet under a thin layer of hay worked well, it's soft for them to move on.

Lots of vibes

FC xx
