  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Oh my god - Gilbert just nearly choked, it was SOOOO frightening. He'd been making a funny noise while eating his veg, but it was the same noise he does when drinking, so I didn't worry too much, then he appeared to be in distress and I realised he was choking!!!

I had no idea what to do, so i rubbed his back, and tapped him lightly, then tried to look in his mouth to see what was wrong, and I was just about to ring Jill (honeybunny) (cos weirdly that was the first thing that occured to me, rather than ringing my vet!!!) when he suddenly recovered. And carried on eating  typical Gilbert!!

I was so frightened!! What should I do when this happens, just in case it ever happens again?

xx

I would pop him along to the Vet tomorrow as he may have a Dental problem or Respiratory Tract problem. It is very unusual for a Bun to 'choke' on food and its always best to err on the side of caution

When my bun Daisy choked, we took her to vets and it was some sort of infection that had given her a sore throat and made it hard to swallow. She had an injection - but I cant remember what it was! - and feed her small chopped up pieces of veg for a couple of days and watched her carefully while she ate, after a couple of days she was much improved. x
