Theres just been a hawk in my garden!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh my god!!!!!!

I just popped into house and Liquorice was outside and i heard this squarking!!! A hark killing another bird in my garden!!!!! My O/H said it was a hawk...it was massive!!!

Oh my god! Liquorice was sooooo lucky! I feel sick!!!!

I thought birds like that only hunted in the country or forests???
 
I've seen them above motorways etc so wouldn't put it past them to take advantage of spotting some prey in a built-up area if they were flying past - which is why I don't leave my buns out unattended at all.
 
It could easily have been a sparrow hawk. There was a thread on here recently. I get them in my garden, and whilst I dont think they'd take an adult bun, I would trust them with a baby.

Buzzards however will go for bigger prey.
 
I was outside my work with my OH (yes, having a fag!) and a sparrow hawk swooped down about 2 meters from us, looked at us for a while, flapped it's feathers 5 seconds later and flew off again!!! :shock: Woah, I was amazed, I had no idea they were so unafraid of humans, so yes, wouldn't put it past them and especially larger birds of prey.
 
well whatever this was it wasnt afraid of two adults! We walked over to it and it never flinched!!!!!

Liquorice also started to trot over to check it out - at which point my heart was in my mouth!!!!
 
he wasnt in run...he was in garden with me.

i popped into kitchen for something and heard this awful squarking and i ran out!!!!!
 
Oh right, you were really lucky then... Thank goodness it made a noise... just wondered... if you put a fake bird in the garden it might deter it??? or is that just stalks??
 
thank gosh ur rabbit is ok.that must scary.it must have freaked u OUT:shock: are just regular hawks rare?.did u faint or where u about too?
 
Yeh you can get fake birds of prey statues. I think a large owl statue may scare a kestrel, or better yet a golden eagle!! :shock: :D
 
Well if Liquorice is anything like the size of barney it will take a golden eagle to carry him off. :D What size was it? Kestrels are quite small. Buzzards are brown and speckled looking and big.

Double the size of Liquorice (adult about 2kgs)

I think...it happened so fast and i was really paniced....it was fairly big:!:
 
Most likely going to be a sparrowhawk if it took a bird in your garden. They are quite common and specialise in taking birds such as small passerines and doves/pigeons so regularly hunt in urban/suburban areas. There's nothing to say it wouldn't take a small rabbit if it saw an opportunity, but to be honest, its not really what they feed on. Buzzards on the other hand unfortunately will take rabbits as they form the main part of their diet. Though they are not anywhere near as common in gardens as sparrowhawks. Kestrels are smaller and tend to hunt small rodents over fields, verges and embankments. We definitely have sparrowhawks in our area and I have seen them in our garden a couple of times. Our buns are secure in a run so I don't really worry too much about the sprawks or the cats.
