  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Help with a pregnant doe please...

Stewy: that's when the mother rabbit aborts the pregnancy and the babies are reabsorbed into her body, and it'll be like she was never pregnant.

I'm not sure how late this can happen, but I'm pretty sure rabbits can abort their litters all the way up till the end of the pregnancy.
I've only seen a rabbit abort her litter once, 2 weeks into pregnancy she started bleeding and according to a class-mate she also delivered an undeveloped stillborn.

I had a doe reabsorb at about 2wks, but 2 wks later she gave birth to 2 healthy kits.

    oh my goodness!, how do you know she reabsorbed if she gave birth?

I wish I could find a paper on this so as I can read up about it but can't, oh well! thanks anyway Su

Not being too graphic she passed blood & clot like blobs. i described it to my vet who said it sounded like she`d re-absorbed/aborted, but 2 wks later she gave birth to 2 healthy babies.
Apparently sometimes they can partially re-absorb if they are carrying to many for their body to cope with or some of the foetuses aren`t forming properly.
