  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Naughty bunny wont take his medicine

My rabbits are on a course of Panacur and Gizmo is being particularly naughty and spitting it out. He's a black rabbit and I find it hard to see where is mouth is half the time anyway :)lol: ) and when I do finally get it in his mouth, he spits it out again!! How does everyone else cope with getting their buns to take their medicine?

Have you tried tipping the syringe with honey or jam?

The sweet taste can help trick them into eating it....they also find it harder to spit out if the are on their backs (head raised to prevent choking).

When I gave Charlie and Poppy theirs I got sick of battling with the syring, Charlie takes it without even being held down but finding Poppy's mouth and getting it in wasn't easy so...

A teaspoon of weetabix and a bit of chopped/pureed apple, mix with panacur and the greedy gobblers ate it all up, they had a small dish each separately so they got the right dose.

Mine ate it either off a dried cranberry, as they are quite sweet and you can put the Panacur sort of inside it, or inside a small piece of banana.

My giants only took it a few times like this, so I squirted the Panacur straight into a small syringe that was easier to handle, and put it in the side of their mouths - have to say they weren't too keen, but it was easier than trying to handle a wriggly rabbit and an akward large syringe:lol:

Personally we always put ours on a small piece of bread they wolf it down. No chance of them taking it with a siringe.
