  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Mites/lice

I've just noticed a rather large number of unwelcome visitors in Bailey's fur whilst I was grooming him. Hes having a moult again and hes ingesting fur :( I checked Luuna and she seems to have even more, but maybe at a different stage in the life cycle? They are like little white grubs with a black head in her fur, they are longer and brown in his fur. They move pretty quickly and (sorry for this) they crack if you squash them between your nails. Obviously I will get them to the vets on Monday, or sooner if anyone thinks its urgent. Could mites/lice be causing excessive moulting? As Luuna doesn't moult a lot, but Bailey has always seemed to. They seem to mainly be on their backs, none that I can see on their heads. They went into the vets on Tuesday for Luuna to have her teeth burred. Could they have picked them up then? Because neither I nor the vet has ever noticed them before :?

They sound like lice to me - the buns might have picked them up from the vet but the only lice I've ever had experience with were on rats + guineas who caught them from hay :(

thats exactly like what our wild bunny had when we got her.these were a reddish brown tho.it was a great satisfaction to pop the little sods between my nails!!!the vet gave us a droplet thing to put on her neck but it took 3 weeks to get rid completely

Sound quite yuk, hope you manage to get rid of them soon. :)

I've just noticed some possible little visitors on Fudge today so will get them checked out when I get his mxy vaccination topped up this week. (Pauses to scratch....... ) He's doesn't seem to be scratching himself much but noticed some minute grey specks in the white bits of his coat today.
