  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Should I let her go under anaesthetic?

A few weeks ago I posted for advice about my bunny- Sugar, who was suffering from a UTI. Im glad to say she's recoverd from that but isnt eating her pelats now and the vets are telling me that her back teeth are overgrown and she'l have to go under anaesthetic. I dont understand why this has happened as we take her to the vets for regular checkups. The reason why im weary about this is the chance of loosing her while shes having her teeth filed. They want her to come in all day but she gets ever so scared when she goes to the vets and last time I took a pet to stay all day at the vets he died.My parents said the decision is up to me and they're willing to pay the costs but they wanted me to get some advice so I dont end up making a huge mistake. I just want to do the right thing.
Thank you

Im afraid that if she dosnt get her teeth filed she will only get worse over time and evetually stop eating altogether....leading to bloat/stasis and eventual death.

Some vets are skilled enough to Burr without using GA....there are some people on here who have vets able to do this. It is much cheaper too.

Diet is really important in controling dental wear and it is important to get your bunny eating loads of hay.....even if it means cutting down her pellets. Even greens are better for promoting dental wear than pellets as they encourage side to side chewing as opposed to the up and down motion required to breakdown a pellet.

I have a dental rabbit who had a molar burring in January and with a careful diet we are now 9 months without needing another.

I can only imagine how upsetting this must be for you, especially as you have lost a bun in similar circumstances before, but I think you need to do whats right for your bunny, if she isn't eating she must be in pain so she needs help.
