  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Problems with eyesight?

My bf asked me last night whether Milo might have a problem with his sight and this has now got me thinking......

When he was younger he was handled alot (he was very poorly and i had to syringe feed him)

As he's grown up he's become more skittish, hates being handled and no way would i dare to pick him up now

He jumps at the smallest thing and seems terrified when we go near him, although he does calm down when we pet him and talk to him. If he's sat in the hallway and we leave the room to enter it he dashes off in fright to hide, or if we approach him from behind or the side its almost like he hasnt seen us, then when he senses us near he rushes off again!? :? We've now taken to calling his name before we enter where he is, or if we are leaving a room so he knows we are coming.

I have checked his eyes and can't see anything obvious. Is it that he is just a nervy bun or is it possible he might have something wrong with his sight?

He may have poor eyesight

If you shine a small torch at each eye the pupil should immediately contract in response to light. If it does not that is indicative of a sight problem
A Vet would be able to check Milo's Retina (back of eye) with an Opthalmoscope for any signs of damage/abnormality

Does he ever scan? (this is when a bun sits still but slowly moves it's head from side to side) this is a sign of short-sightedness and is common in red-eyed rabbits.
