  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Coccidiosis - kidneys?

This is sort of a bunny question! ;) I have been going backwards and forwards with my 3 guinea pigs to the vet for months now and, despite numerous antibiotics, they still have persistent cystitis.

Anyway, the vet today mentioned that, as part of the other options/ideas, he had recently heard that rabbits who have persistent urinary tract problems can turn out to have coccidiosis causing problems in their kidneys, and are cured by coccidiosis treatment (didn't say what). In theory this could be the case with guinea pigs.

This seems odd to me - I thought coccidiosis caused diarrhoea. Just wondered if anyone knew anything in general about it (bunnies or piggies).

i have a rabbit who is just about to get treatment for coccidosis, he has the liver type (we think) and has had no diahorrea, just weight loss.

my rabbit who died (we now think of coccidosis) had weight loss, hair loss and a general lack of energy even though he was eating like a horse.

can't really help other than that, my rabbits are all about to be treated with something that you put in the water.

These are some old threads on Coccidia

Ignore the pointless back biting on this one after the first few posts ;)

Useful, plain English explanantion:

We used Trimethoprim to treat ours in the end, this is also a type of anti-biotic, so that may be why your vet feels it could help with cystitis?

I have or cannot remember reading any reference to Cocidia affecting the kidneys....only hepatic coccidia which affects the liver.
