  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Sore looking skin

happy little bunny

Warren Scout
I've just been through to clean the bunnies out there in the spare room at the moment because they have both had nodular myxi. I picked muffin up to give him a cuddle and under his tummy and around his genitals hes got fur missing and his skin looks really red and sore it felt a bit dry too. any idears hat it could be ? ive bathed it in salt water and given him some baytril until i can get him to the vets.

Any suggestions would be appriciated

No i don't think so the genitals are not swollen at all and all muffins scabs fell off weeks ago. Its just that a week ago he had thick white fur there now its just sore looking skin very red thats why i bathed it with salt water.

Its just urinary incontinence is common for inflammation of the skin around the bottow as the urine burns the skin.

Its often a result of either a urinary tract infection or EC.

If its inflammed you may want to see your vet to see if he can prescribe an anti-inflammatory cream such as Fuciderm.

You can use vaseline or Sudocreme to moisturise it and work as a barrier cream to prevent any urine touching it (if thats what is causing the problem).

Baytril will treat a UTI but you would need Panacur for EC, has he been wormed at all?

Another thing that can cause urinary incontinence is kidney stones or bladder sludge.
