  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Another ear abscess

Well either I'm really unlucky or these ear absecesses are more common than you think! Tilly has just had the same operation that Sylvia had about 2 months ago. I noticed a lump about 4 weeks ago at the base of her left ear, took her to the vet after going on holiday and she was operated on on Friday.

Here is a pic of her hole from today - currently in the process of being cleaned daily with sterile saline and she's getting lots of medication too! Forgot to take a picture of all the stuff the vet gave me but nevermind...

Sylvia's ear is now very well healed and she hasn't had any further infection at the site... so far. Helen

Aaah, she's really quite a nervy little bun. She doesn't like having her ear cleaned at all, it must be very sensitive even though she is on Metacam :(

It's actually very hard to get into her ear to clean it because the opening is very narrow. On Sylvia is was quite large so relatively easy to keep clean. I hope she will be ok hx
