  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

We got tigger from our local pet shop last week. He is settling in well but is very very thin, we can feel his spine and ribs. He wasn't really eating for the first few days, but now eating plenty of rabbit dried food and plenty of hay. And tiny amounts of fresh stuff - he's not used to it yet. Now that he's settled he's alert and active, no other apparent problems.

Anything we can give him to built him up a bit?

and are there any health probs that might explain the low weight?

We're going to the vet next week to ask about jabs etc, we don't know how much experience they have on rabbits, so looking some advise from the experts.

How old is he? In a lot of cases rabbits are brought too the pet store far too early, before they are fully weaned:cry: They start eating at 3 weeks, but are still depended on mothers milk til they are 6-8 weeks.

8 weeks old when we got him a week ago.

We also have guinea pigs, our oldest boy was very thin when we got him, from a different pet shop. They had accidental babies which we rehomed privately at 10 weeks, lovely chubby healthy babies! They also become weaned at 6 - 8 weeks, but we felt they needed the extra week or two.

We are worried about our rabbit baby - he's so boney!

You could try him with some Spillers Readigrass or Dodson and Horrells 'Just Grass'. They are both more fattening than normal hay and might help him. They smell great too and are tempting.
You could also add a few porridge oats to his feed. They are used for thin buns that need to put on weight. Take care not to feed to many - just a sprinkle on his food - you need to avoid bloating his tummy. I think some people soak them in water first to avoid them swelling in the tummy - hopefully someone else can advise on this

Get the vet to pop him on the scales while your there.

My bunnies vary in weight from 1.3kg to 3.5kg, they are different breeds though
