Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

sorrel's abscess - take her to the vet?

Sorrel had a chin abscess before I got her. It was removed and left a scar. I was told to keep an eye on this and note any changes.

It doesn't usually do anything but today it has been oozing a lot and her face feels a slightly different shape on one side. Shall I take her to the vet for a checkup?

I'm pretty certain I'm going to take her anyway for peace of mind but I wanted people's opinions on how serious or otherwise it sounds. thankyou in advance

Abcesses are really nasty and if there is discharge it definately needs attention. They get really bad really quickly so i would certainly get her to the vets for it to be cleaned and some anti-biotics.

Having just lost a Rabbit to a facial abscess that came up overnight I would say get your Bun to a Vet *this afternoon* Rabbit abscesses are really not something to leave as they can do so much damage

Good luck

You'll be pleased to know i managed to get an apppoinment for less than an hour after posting that thread, they've given her some baytril and she's going back on wednesday. thanks guys. i hope she's alright, my poor baby :(

Aww bless ya! Keep an eye on it though, sometime Baytril isn't strong enough... I have had to push for Penicillen before now

She's going to have a look on wednesday to see how sorrel's progressing and possibly put her onto penicillin, she's just avoiding it initially because of the associated potential gut problems. i liked her actually she sounded like she knew her stuff. not that i'm really anyone to judge a vet!

Shes quite right, penicillin is a dangerous anti-biotic in rabbits but there are times when its beneficial powers outweight the associated risks.

You need good gut support in place though.

she advised to put the baytril on some food. does it taste unpleasant to rabbits? should i spread it out over a fair bit of food to dilute the taste so she won't suspect? shes having 0,3ml twice daily.

I know i could also put it straight in her mouth but there's no way sorrel will stand for that.

I have been tricking Caramel into having hers by cutting a section out of an apple, filling it with baytril and putting the section back, then leaving it to soak in for a bit before serving!

Alvin lapped up a tiny piece of brown bread with it soaked in..... the apple didnt work for me... he must have watched me trying to trick him....lol

i soaked a tiny bit into each of her pellets, she had no idea, she is such a piglet. At least its not going to be difficult getting it down her!

i was told by the vet checking berties abscess to mix neat ribena in with the baytril..still have to syringe it down tho:shock:

i havent medicated bertie tonite..hes too aggressive for me to do alone so when my daughter wakes up bout 4 am..he can have his meds then. hes been given the all clear but to take antibiotics till wed. and to keep an eye on it etc.

if it hadnt have responded on the friday after being diagnosed on the mon..or itd got worse in that time then theyd go with penicillin....

good luck..its the bathing bit thats even harder than medicating!
