Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

itching...

... dunno what's causing it, so want to know the best flea/mite/lice treatment there is available to buy online? (yes, for rabbits! )
Also - are spot-ons safe??? wouldn't the rabbit's hutch-mate ingest it when they groom each other :?

There isn't any 'one size fits all' treatment for fleas, lice and mites.

I'd advise you to to do a thorough check of all your furries to see what the problem is.

These are the treatments I'd advise in each case...

Fleas = Advantage for small dogs/cats/rabbits

Lice = Xenex Ultra

Mites = Ivermectin or selemectin (pref. injection, but also available as a spot-on).

I've never had any bad reaction to Advantage or ivermectin, but Xenex Ultra has caused itching and sore spots in mine.

If YOU are itching, then it's probably NOT lice, cos they don't tend to stray from the rabbit.

Re. grooming by cage-mates.... Keep them apart until dry if possible, although I don't think any of these treatments 'attract' attention from other rabbits as such.

However I do have a rabbit who goes mad for Canaural ear drops

I think advantage is prescription only :? I'll have a good look through thier fur to see what it is :) then pop them along to the vet if need be...
and luckily I'm not itching yet!

Faye, your vet won't need to see the rabbits in order to prescribe Advantage.

Sometimes they won't prescribe it unless they've seen the rabbit in the past 6 months though

Also...if they are ALL itching it's probably NOT mites.

Sounds like it might be FLEAS  :( Try flea combing them, especially around the head area.

it's just the 2 housebunnies who arrived yesterday itching... I've asked the vet to order some advantage in for me - I'll pick it up tomorrow :)
I've also ordered some Xenex Ultra just in case!
Really hoping that it's not fleas :?
thanks for your help
