Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Myxi found in Hounslow story in local paper

Just thought i would let everyone in this area know that it was reported in the chronicle this week that a rabbit had died of myxi, i am so scared its right here now, Lionel can't have his jab yet because hes on antibiotics

Unfortunately there are problems all over the country with myxie due to the long warm, wet weather we have had over the past months. Most vets in every area have unfortuately had incidents of myxie in the the past weeks.

There are many things which people can do to help reduce the risk of contracting myxie even if they are unable to be vaccinated at the moment.

These include removing any stagnant water in gardens. If you have a pond add fishes.
Using treatments like xenex ultra to repel biting insects
Using net curtains on hutches and runs to protect animals from insects.

Thank you for the tips, he is a house bunny so is there anything i can do for him inside?

If you have other animals such as cats and dogs ensure that they are reguarly deflee'd. The use of of anti mosquito plugs and net curtains can reduce biting insects entering your house. Citronella candels can also keep flying insects at bay, also lavendar plants are meant to be effective.

Getting all buns vaccinated every 6 months helps protect buns from myxie, although not 100% reliable it does greatly increase the survival rate of those who do succumb to the disease. When rabbits are vaccinated some of the vaccine needs to be given intradermally, the rest subcutaneously.

Holy Cow!! Just got my Boys their jabs on Saturday. How log does it take to kick in?

I guessing it can be transfer via contact too? If i touch a infected bunny and handle a uninfected bunny, the uninfected might catch it?

No it is only passed by biting insects. You could have 2 buns living together and only one be infected.

I have all mine indoors now reduces it a little bit. From hedgehogs mice e.t.c

When do all these yuk insects die down anyway it should be getting colder now
