Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

i have recently been informed that this symptons occur with E.cuniculi ive just ordered some lapizole to treat all mine supposably it affect 50% rabbits in england ask ur vet about maybe she can shead some light on it

the parasite reproduce in the kidneys where it can destroy cells and permently damage kidney tissue. this can result in the rabbit showing increased thirst and urination, weight loss and at worst kidney failure and death. after multiplying in the kidney the spore travel through the body via the blood. once it reaches the brain it forms cysts in the brain tissue that can rupture cells resulting in a servere inflammatory reaction. affected rabbits will exibit hind limbs paralysis, tremors or head tilt.
the thing thats the worst about this parasite is that its zoonotic:evil:

sorry, i have no advice to give as i have never had the problem....all i send is get better vibes for your little....well big bunny!

Hi Please ensure you get your bunny to a vet and if your vet is unsure ask for a referral to a vetwho specialises in rabbits - this wont necessarily cost you any more and may mean your rabbits problems are diagnosed quicker. My first vets were absolutely clueless with my rabbit so I got him referred. I think vets are only really getting to grips with this disease and they will often give different advice or not really know about it.

My bun died of EC about 4 months ago. He was a big rabbit too and gradually seemed to lose coordination. when a bunnies back legs go its a really really serious thing and from speaking to two rabbit vets including an rSpca rabbit vet and a rescue its rare that they recover. With EC they tend to remain really very happy in terms of eating etc but it affects their nervous system and kidneys as rex ravens says although can affect their hearts and lungs and eyes, Its also very common in pet bunnies amd sspreads through urine. They can remain symptom free and keep the disease under control for a long time. EC is a paraste and when the parasite hatches kind of out of the tissue it causes the damage and an inflammatory response this then causes the symptoms. A vet would normally treat with an anti inflammatory and a course of panacur wormer which has an ingrediant called fembranazole or similar and probably baytril too to cover the bases eg abcess on the brain etc. It takes bunnies a long while for them to recover from EC but from what ive heard the ones that get head tilt type symptoms recover better than those whose back legs it affects. I had to make the decision to put my bunny to sleep as he was incontinent unable to clean himself properly and couldnt move around or even stay upright without help and he didnt improve. It completely broke my heart and I dearly wish Id know a lot more sooner and treated him for it regularly as I do with my other bunnies now but I gave him every chance and you should too.

But... its important you get him checked to rule out any trauma eg spinal damage and treated properly. Other diseases can also cause similar problems with their leg function.

Is he drinking or weeing more than normal as EC affects kidneys. Have you noticed if hes still using the same corner or litter tray. My bunny would wee anywhere anyplace when he had ec whereas before hed pick a corner or use a tray.

Good luck with him and do your best for him

i am so sorry to hear about your giant rabbit it bought tears to my eyes. the vet gave my rabbitt a course of anti inflamortary injections he thinks it may be muscle waste or a spinal injury.she is eating and drinking and loves he hay more than anything. the vet gave me panacur for her but i cant use it as she jumps and bops about and i cant get it in her mouth. the vet mentioned an mri scan but it is 750 pounds ,,,,small fortune, but i have found a vet who specialises in rabbits and im going there tommorrow so she can have some blood tests. right now i have her in the kitchen on a big qiult ..she is so so loving and is only 1 year old my first giant ...i also have a little rex rabbitt 2 years old he is solid ...........but i hope my bell will pull through im so attached to her.and thankyou for your messae and concern xx

thats wat i was trying to say about panacur its very hard to get a GIANT RABBIT to take where as this LAPIZOLE is ainseed flavour so they love it ask your vet for it they should have it in stock by now it specialy made just for Encephalitozoon cuniculi it doesnt reverse the damage but it stops it completly if you look about the net i managed to find it for £15 so its not that bad and it works a mate of mine swears by it:D hope you have better luck with this product:D

I don't think it's a good idea to tell people to buy medicines off the internet- they should only be administered at the advice of your vet.

When I had to give my bunnies Panacur I squeezed the dose onto a small piece of spring green and then folded it up and hand fed it.

Good luck with your bunny!

belle

well i dont know what panacur does... i just hope my belle starts to put on weight. i am so confused i dont know what it can be and the vet doesnt either. i hope it is not liver disease as she is only 1 year old ..she has had a ourse of antiinflamotory injections for muscle loss. but i dont know how long this takes to work or if it will

if you look carefully i say to get it from the vet! i said i managed to buy it off the internet, and wouldnt that mean that buying coxiod of the internet is bad but then tell me where would you get it from?!

panacur is given to rabbits that proberbly have worms.
A day after giving panacur you can see the worms comming out when she drops some fresh poo.
But only when its fresh you can see them, worms dry out whitin 15 minutes and are no longer good to see whit your eyes.
If there are worms coming out you have to repeat the treatment after 10 days, dipending on what kind of form panacur you have.
If she has worms than that could explain her weight loss problem

hi i havent noticed any worms? is it for paracites too???

Sandy - panacur is a wormer and sold as a wormer for cats and small dogs but the ingrediants treat other protozoa infections of which EC is one. I never struggled to give my bunnies panacur but I think Rex Ravens has the right idea in terms of this new product if it tastes better its easier to get it down them and you really need to do so for 28 days to treat EC. Otherwise wrap him in a towel and either crouch over her or hold on your knee and aim to squirt it in behind the front teeth.

I would see your vet and see if they can get this or if not buy on the internet but check the dosage with your vet. If theres a risk of EC you must treat your bunny as otherwise these little protozoas are going to continue to cause damage inside and it can affect other organs.

The anti inflammatory jabs will treat the inflammationcaused by the damage of whatever shes got but youve got to persist with the panacur or the Lapi whatever it was in order to treat for EC.

They can test for EC but its not hugely reliable and will only show if the rabbit has launched an immune response to the disease. Ideally they need to test treat for a few weeks and retests as well as see how your bunny is doing. That shows if the treatment has affected the blood test but it wont necessarily mean your bunny is better as its the damage and the immune response that cuases the symptoms. Good luck
