  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Need some help please :(

Hi Guys, As you may know, the bunnies have been poorly for a while with snotty noses, runny eyes & sneezes, also raspy breathing and noise on their chests. Jen in particular. They had a course of antibiotics which didnt touch it, so they arent being treated at all. This is the vets advice (one I trust fully) as she doesnt want young, otherwise healthy bunnies on constant medication. We said that i'd keep some antibiotics in for when theyre at their worst. Anyway, over the past few weeks, their eyes have cleared up fully and their noses are almost clear too, jens still got minimal discharge. So, alls well. Then Jen starts with sort of skin problem going on under her eye. Its hard to explain, but its all scabby, then this morning I've had a look and shes bleeding from it, looks so sore  The skin is literally going horrible, then falling off :? Im going to call the vets when they open and get her booked in, but i've just had a bit of a google and some sites seem to suggest that the two problems could be linked?! :? Wondered if anyone could help? I'm really at the end of my tether with poorly bunnies :( Thanks, Becki Xx

eeew  It is hard work playing at nurses - I certainly struggle when mine are poorly :( I can only imagine that when their eyes were weepy the skin got a bit waterlogged and died off slightly, and now it's drying up it's peeling off - have you put any vaseline on it?

Aww i know what you mean my Scrumpie used to have blocked tear ducts and flushing them only worked for a bit. Under his eye used to get sore with the wetness and his fur used to matter together so i used to bath it every few days and then put a dot of vaseline on the sore bit and it used to waterproof it aswell as heal it . Poor bunny Hope they all get well soon.

I had a rescue bun, Harley who had severe problems with his eyes....when he arrived they were so badly matted with eye crusties that the fur peeled away taking skin with it and the salt from his tears dried and craked the exposed skin.

I think we used a combination of Fuciderm and vaseline to sooth the inflammation and protect the skin.

Thanks for your replies guys, much appreciated. I'm not too sure if it actually could even be from the discharge we had coming from her eyes though. That seemed to run straight down from the corner, and this is right the other side...where i've never seen any 'goo'. Could well be though I guess. Got in at the vets tomorrow evening. I feel like every bunny that comes into my hands looses out...Jen had such a **** life before, and was perfectly healthy, comes to a loved home with a huge house, good food and lots of cuddles - and shes constantly ill :( Ho Hum Xx
