  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

My rabbits bum is gungey and she wont eat

I went outside to clean my 5 year old netherland dwarf rabbit out when I noticed she hadnt eaten any of her food or her treat(that she usually loves) that I'd put there this morning. She was lying down in an odd way that id never seen before under her cardboard den. I moved the den and she moved into her bedroom and lay with her bum in the air. I had a close look at it, there were no maggots or flies nesting in it but it had a strong smell. It was yellow gungey stuff under her scut. I could tell she was unwel and called the vets but they were closed so we rang emergancy for advice. They said to wash her bum with salt water so we did and it looks like shes feeling more comfortable but im still very worried.I wondered if anyone knows what this could be and what i can do to help her.
Thank you.

I think she needs to see the emergency vet today! She sounds very poorly. :(

I agree, it sounds as though she has a poorly tummy which really needs treatment from a Vet today. Your Bun may be in pain so the sooner you get her to a Vet the better. Please let us know how you get on

Thank you for the support, unfortunatly we couldnt get Sugar to the vet last night, the costs were too huge and I didnt want to make mum and dad pay it. She stayed in my room last night in her carrycase to keep her warm and quiet. She was drinking a lot of water through the night and even though she still wouldnt touch her food she was eating hay.We are getting her to the vets as soon as they open at 10 today so hopefuly they can sort her out and put her out of pain, its awful seeing her like this, Thanks again.

I am sorry that your parents have permitted you to have a Rabbit yet do not appear to have accepted *their* part in being responsible for obtaining emergency Veterinary care.
Its not your fault as you are obviously not able to force your parents to pay for Veterianry treatment. But maybe you should consider what may happen in the future should this Bunny, or any other pet you may have, become sick and need Veterinary Care.

I apologise for appearing to give you a lecture, I know that by asking for advice on here you are doing what you can to get help for your sick Rabbit. I am cross with your Mum and Dad, as the adults who *should* be taking responsibility in this situation, not with you.

I do hope that your Rabbit can be made better or at least relieved of pain

If she's eating hay and drinking, that's good - it's natural medicine for a poorly tum :) I hope she'll be OK soon - maybe she just needs a course of antibiotics from the vet? It's good she's keeping warm in your room too - I hope she can stay there till she's better :)

Hello again, back from the vets.It was a shame we couldnt take her last night. They said she has one of two problems. One could be a uti and The other one began with P and ment she had puss filled overies. They said if she has the uti then she'l be fine. We have medicen for her witch we are to give her twice a day through seringe, she seems to like it. Her temperature is very low as the minimam is 37 and she is 33.8. What can I do to raise her temperature?
Thanks.

Just keep her warm indoors in a heated room, with a hot water bottle wrapped in a towel near her (but not under her incase she's too hot with it) - just make it like a hospital. Glad she likes the medicine - if she's not spayed she's very likely got problems with her reproductive system at her age, so may need a hysterectomy - hopefully it's just a UTI though.

Thankyou for the tips, Sugar hasnt been spayed. I was Eight when I got her and I didnt want her to have an operation. What is a hysterectomy? She seems to be more perky now shes had the medican and even ate some bunny feed. Im worried because she isnt pooping though, every now and again she'l leave this brown liquid on the floor and I dont know what it is.

A hysterectomy is just a spay - removal of the womb and ovaries :) Did your vet suggest that when you took her? Not all vets specialise in rabbit medicine, so ask your vet how many spays on rabbits he's done, and what anaesthetic he uses, what type of stitches etc. as rabbits need special care compared to cats. Usually it costs around £70. Often when they start having unusual discharge 'down there' it means they need spaying to avoid cancer developing.

Thanks, yeah I was asked if I wanted to have her spayed when she was a a baby but I said no , I didnt know she'd get ill if she didnt have it:cry: .I'l definately look into getting it done now. Can she still have it at 5 and a half?
They were going to treat her for puss filled overies yesterday and give her an operation but she was too weak for it. Shes still not eating proper food except she ate her feildberrytreat this morning and is eating hay.I havn't noticed any of the brown liquid recently. I'm taking her to the vets again tommorow afternoon so I can find out if shes gunna be ok:) .

So releived! Her temperature is up to 37.3 and her bums clearing up, she has 9 more days on the baytril and they want to see her a week after the medication ends. Also, sugars now a house bunny:D .

Aww I'm glad she's a house bunny now - old ladies appreciate some home comforts especially in winter :D Hope she's better soon she sounds like she's improving - as baytril over a long period can upset their stomach bacteria you might want to buy a probiotic powder to sprinkle on her food (wet it first) - the vet should have some or you can get it online from here http://www.noahs-cupboard.co.uk/detail.asp?catno=4&pnum=A2A4Z

Hi Fallingstar,

I'm glad Sugars temp is a bit higher today.

I would definately recommend that you get Sugar spayed when she is well enough as more than 80% of unspayed female rabbits develop uterine cancer before the age of five.

Good luck for your veterinary appointment. Please let us know how Sugar gets on.

Hugs,

Nicola and Harvey xxx
