Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Post Neutering Op Care

hi, can i have your advices/comments on this matter:

Following a neuter op, have your buns come home with some form of pain relief to be given? :?

My old vets - no. I have just started using a new vet and took a foster bun in for a spay last week. I was given some metacam to give for the next 3 days which I thought was very good, as they tend to be a bit sore for a while after. I wouldn't of thought it necessary for castrates though.

nope... for a male I don't think it's a good idea because when they're sore they know the area will be sensitive so therefor they wont try to pull out the stitches. well that's what I'd imagine anyway.

It's important that a bun has adequate pain relief to recover properly and start eating and pooping.

A bun in pain can easily go into GI stasis and need gut motility drugs and syringe feeding to get through it.

No, they get given a 24 hour injected painkiller at the vets, and then I take them back if there's a problem after that time. I do find that females often need a bit more, males are usually ok though.

No in my spayed bunnies' case, and I think they should have. It's quite a big op for them and I can't think that the pain only lasts for 24 hours.

Yes mine have had the same as that. Though I do agree that perhaps girlies should come home with some more. It must remain sore for longer than 24 hours. All my boys have been just fine though.

Squidgy had a painkiller at the vets, and also some metoclopramide to help his tummy. The vet also gave me Baytril to give him for a week, just to guard against infection.
