  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Biscuit's feet

When I picked her up earlier on, I noticed a lump on her "heel" on her back feet. There was one on each foot. She didn't seem to mind me and Martyn having a look at them, and touching them, but then she wouldn't notice if a bomb dropped right next door. I don't know what they are. I tried taking photos to put on here incase anyone knows what they could be caused by or what they are.

Any ideas? Should I get them checked out at the vets?

Was the skin 'bald' or red, cracked?

Does the 'ball' roll about under the skin, is it detached?

There is a small ball shaped bone at the base of each hock and this is where rabbits tend to develope 'sore hock' as it takes most of the pressure from their body weight. I usually treat it with a little Fuciderm and keep it clean and dry as much as possible until it heals.

It was bald red & cracked. Looked like sore dry skin. Do they hurt the bunnies? I don't know how long they've been there so I'd hate to know if she's been in pain for a while. Would it be worth taking her to the vet, or can I buy something to treat it?

Nappy cream such as sudocream is very good as well. Best of all is Flamazine(prescription only rom the vet), but you may well find it clears up with the other creams sugggested. :)

Certainly take her to the vets. Its more uncomfortable than painful for them but there is always a risk of it getting infected if left untreated.
