  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Young Bun
Well, yesterday afternoon I picked up my bun nd I felt some hard little bits in its fur.So I decided to clip some hair off and see what it was. When I did so, I saw these little red bits of scab type things that felt really rough. I was really scared cause I thought it could be flystrike, so I decided to go to the vets but because it was late they told me it looked like a skin ifection and to go back today. So today in the morning I went back and the vet said it had a skin infection caused by bacteria that rabbits have on their skin and that can get like this if the rabbit's immune system isn't too ok. So she told me to clean it 3 times a day with antispetic solution and then put some helaing cream on it. Also she gave me antibiotics.
Has anyone heard of these skin problems on rabbits?
These are some pics.

To me it looks like your rabbit has been biting itself because of itching from fleas or mites/lice - did the vet mention anything like that too?

Erm no...she just asked if it had been fighting with the 2 others, but no, they never fight, so she said something may have bitten it and it scratched itself. But she checked and I have been cheking and there are no fleas or anything on him. And I disinfect their cage every week and clean the toilet out every day.

well your vet should have given you something like ivermectin just incase he has mites - they are hard to see :)
