Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Echinacea - Please help

wonkybrows

New Kit
Hi,

My poor bun has myxi. He is fighting it and thankfully he was vaccinated. He is very snuffly so my husband has bought him some Echinacea. It is the highly concentrated one from Holland and Barrett so I am not sure how much to give him as I don't want to overdose him. It is the Echinacea/Goldenseal Liquid Extract. It says it is highly concentrated and a one ml serving is the equivilent to 500mg of the dried herb. An adult should have 1ml mixed in a litlle water 3 to 6 times a day. Does anyone have any idea how much I should give a Bun and in how much water or is this one too concentrated? Many thanks.

I don't know I'm afraid, my only advise would be consult your vet and see what he/she suggests.

Hope your bun pulls through

When I have had buns who have been on this I usually put 3 drops in a 500 ml bottle. I also know people who use 1/2 a rosehip and echinasea t bag sprinkled on their dried food each day.

hiya,

i think it might depend on the size of your bunny. I had a british gint doe with snuffles and used echinaforce which is widely available but not so concentrated and I put 15 drops in a 1 litre bottle and this worked a treat... does it give a child's doseage recommendation? if so, i'd give that - probably half the adult dose, or if it's a mini / dwarf breed, try 1/4 of the adult amount - if it doeasn't seem to make much difference, then i'd slowly increase it until it does, giving about 3-4 days between increasing the doseage until you find what's right for you.

my vet used echinacea to help nurse her own bunny through mixy and said it worked when no other anti-biotic did. you could try ringing her tomorrow. her name's Lyndsey and she works at companion care veterinary surgery in Beckton, London.

if you're bun's bunged up, try putting a bowl of boiling water with some menthol crystal's and olbas oil in the same room (obviously out of reach of your bunny) - the steam helps like with people with a cold.

very best of luck - hope you bunny feels better soon!
