Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Advice on abcess please?!

Lea-Anne

My guinea pig Bazil had an abcess a while back. He had it lanced several times before it eventually went away. Then yesterday it ballooned up again. When I put him in the carrier it popped. Yuk. I squeezed it and got the rest out until there was blood then cleaned it with salty warm water. I have cleaned it again this morning and this afternoon. I was just wondering if theres anything else I can do??? I've got him on Baytril and probiotic on his food.

Does anyone know any "good stuff" to clean it out with or am I just best using salty water? My vet basically told me last time to just keep it draining...
I am ringing my vet first thing but in the meantime if anyone could offer any advice I'd be extremely grateful ????

It sounds as though you are doing all the right things with the salt water washes. Good luck with the vets and I hope he gets better soon.:)

I know some people disagree with this, but I use a solution of hydrogen peroxide and water, i think i dilute at 5 water to 1 hp. The oxygen in it goes into the wound and puts the oxygen back into the skin, killing the bacteria, or something like that! Its been the most successful treatment for abscesses i have had to treat. its important to dilute it otherwise it stings. You can buy it over the counter at boots. Another option is manuka honey, http://www.thehoneydoctor.com/acatalog/Manuka_.html the higher the number the stronger it is. its a bit messy, but as your wound is on the back at least it won't drain out, i had great trouble putting it in an abscess on a tummy once!
Good luck x Jess

Thanks for the well wishes. It means a lot. ;)

Are you ok for the vet run?

Yes thanks. The vet said no need to take him in as I'm doing everything right already. My pooch has got her booster on Wednesday morning so Fiona just said to bring Baz along too;) .

Also got some baytril, gel to kill bacteria inside
