  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

post-op question!

hi, my mum had her boy rabbits "bits" done this tues (11th) and we were wondering when it would be ok to put him back onto sawdust? he is eating and pooping properly now and seems his usual self his wound looks ok still a little bruised but looks dry and clean. please help as my mum is such a worrier she isnt sure.

Personally, i'd keep him away from any type of bedding that could stick to his wound until he's compleately healed (i think it usually takes about 2 weeks) When Hugo got snipped i kept him on newspaper until the vet saw him for a follow up & said everything had healed.

also, my vet told me to avoid sawdust/shavings etc altogether as when mixed with urine they release harmful phenols (or something!) which isnt great for buns respiratory system/eyes. :)

Personally I would never use sawdust as bedding.

I use Megazorb in my litter trays.

When any of mine have been recovering from op's I've just had soft towels and fleece or try a paper based bedding, anything else will irritate the wound and could lead to infection. :D

Nicola
