Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

upper respitory advice

Hi all
i had to take my bun benny to the emergency last night as he was looking quite poorly. The vet said he has an upper respitory infection. He gave him metacam and baytril. this morning he was much perkier and was moving about and came to me for some treats, whereas last night he sat in the same spot and looked very unhappy. i took him back to the vet as he requested and he was given more baytril and i was sent home with baytril. The vet said his chest is clear and it didn't seem to serious.
This evening when i came home he was just like last night and it looks like he hasn't eaten today. He seems to eat if i hand feeding, which i have been doing since i got home.and he has eaten lots of veggies, herbs and some treats but doesn't want to touch his dried food. I suspect his nose is hurting him and he is feeling down but it does worry me as I'm so used to him being lively and very greedy. I have given him some metacam but was wondereing if olbas oil or vick may help. He doesn't have any discharge. I guess if he was really poorly he wouldn't be eating and maybe i need to give chance for the baytril to kick in....but we do worry!

Awww poor boy :( Sounds like he just wants some TLC, which you are giving him so he will be fine - is he in the house too as it's quite chilly tonight? Hopefully when the baytril kicks in he'll feel better :)

Poor Benny Bunny
Baytril can actually reduce a Buns appetite, although this usually occurs on the second or third day of treatment.
I would keep tempting him with tastey food. Upping his fluid intake will help too so as long as he is used to various veggies they are good to feed.
I would also recommend giving him a probiotic to help maintain a healthy gut flora whilst he is on the Baytril.

As a matter of interest what symptoms did Benny show? Sometimes a Dental problem can actually present as an RTI (sneezing/runny nose/gunky eyes/anorexia etc) Did the Vet check Benny's teeth?

You could give him some herbs like rozemarin or thymian, they will help because it are natural "desinfectants" (is this the right word???) anyway it will kil the germs in the upper respiratory organs.
